What is a Wisdom Tooth?

Wisdom Teeth usually develop in young adults.
Wisdom teeth can present challenges because they can be very difficult to keep clean, can be painful, or there may not be enough room for them in the mouth and they’re therefore highly susceptible to tooth decay, infection, and gum disease. About 65% of the population develop wisdom teeth between ages 12 and 15.

Wisdom teeth are actually called third molars. So why do people call them wisdom teeth? The third molars do not grow in until the dental arch becomes larger, which generally occurs around the age of 17-25, a time also referred to as the “age of wisdom.”

FACT

Wisdom teeth got their nickname from the age when they typically grow in.

How Do We Remove These Wisdom Teeth?

Some wisdom teeth will never erupt and will stay impacted. Those that erupt can cause pain as they break through the gum tissue. Prior to the removal of any teeth, especially wisdom teeth, our Oral Surgeon takes a thorough clinical examination and radiographic evaluation/CBCT scan evaluation, if required.

Wisdom teeth may be close to the nerve or sinus cavity and disturbance of these can cause serious issues.

Removal of wisdom teeth is a surgical procedure and is often recommended to be done under local anesthesia, conscious sedation or general anesthesia, depending upon the patient’s choice of treatment and severity of the case.

If you or your child is experiencing pain or tenderness, erupted wisdom teeth could be one of many causes. Give us a call and we will make the proper diagnosis and design the best treatment plan for the problem.
