One of the reasons could be presence of wisdom tooth.
If a wisdom tooth doesn’t have space to grow, results in pain, infection or other dental problems, you’ll most likely need to have it pulled. Wisdom tooth extraction may be done by an Oral Surgeon. This is a surgical procedure.
Wisdom teeth or impacted 3rd molars are the last teeth to erupt in the mouth. These usually appear between the ages 17 and 25.
An impacted wisdom tooth may –
Grow at an angle towards the next tooth(2nd tooth)
Grow at an angle towards the back of your mouth
Grow at a right angle to the other teeth
Pain
Food lodgement behind the teeth
Damage to nearby tooth or supporting bone
Cyst development around the tooth
Tooth decay
Our Oral Surgeon may perform the procedure in the dental office.
Local anaesthesia is given, making the area numb. A tiny portion of the surrounding bone may also need to be removed. The tooth may be divided into smaller pieces in order to facilitate its removal through the opening.
In addition, many patients opt for sedation dentistry so that they are either cognizant, minimally aware of the procedure, or fully unconscious. Your surgeon will select the appropriate sedation based on your degree of comfort and the quantity and complexity of extractions required.
It can take up to two weeks to recover from having one or more wisdom teeth out. During this time, you may experience: a swollen mouth and cheeks. Applying a cool compress to your face helps minimise the swelling.
